The Appalachian Disciples
Welcome to The Appalachian Disciples the podcast where faith gets real, life gets messy, and we try our best to follow Jesus without tripping over our own two feet. We’re your hosts, Tommy and Coty—two guys with a love for scripture, a heart for the mountains, and just enough stubbornness to keep things interesting. Here, we talk about faith the way folks around here do—honest, straight to the point, and maybe with a story or two along the way. From front porch conversations to deep dives into scripture, we’ll explore what it means to live as disciples of Christ—grounded in tradition, but always moving forward. Some weeks, we’ll tackle big questions. Other weeks, we’ll just try to figure out what in the world we’re doing. Either way, expect some laughs, some truth, and maybe even a little convictionSo grab your Bible, a strong cup of coffee and pull up a chair -------- let’s figure this faith thing out together.

In this episode of The Appalachian Disciples, we talk about what it means to live what you believe. James reminds us that faith without works is dead, meaning true faith should be seen in how we love, serve, obey, forgive, and help others. We discuss the difference between trying to perform for people and genuinely obeying God from a changed heart. Through examples like Abraham and Noah, we see that real faith moves into action.

In this episode of The Appalachian Disciples, we continue our conversation exploring the evidence for Christianity by looking at creation and how the world around us points to a Creator.
We talk about the order, beauty, complexity, and design found in creation and ask important questions: Did everything come from nothing? Does the natural world reveal evidence of purpose? And what does creation tell us about the God who made it?
Together, we reflect on how creation is not random or meaningless, but a powerful testimony that points us back to the Creator. This conversation reminds us that faith in Jesus Christ is not blind, irrational, or foolish. It is grounded in truth, supported by evidence, and rooted in the God who created all things.

In this episode of The Appalachian Disciples, we begin a brand-new series exploring the evidence for Christianity and why faith in Jesus Christ is not blind, irrational, or foolish. We talk about: Was Jesus a real person? Can the Bible be trusted historically? And are there sources outside the Bible that confirm Jesus existed?
We dig into ancient historical accounts, early Christian testimony, and the reliability of the Gospel records to show that Christianity is rooted in real events, real places, and a real risen Savior. This conversation is about examining the evidence and understanding that following Christ is grounded in truth.

In this episode of The Appalachian Disciples, we talk about how worship is not just singing a song but rather an act of surrender.
It’s easy to sing songs every Sunday without really thinking about what we’re singing. But when we truly understand what Jesus saved us from, worship stops being routine and becomes a response.

In this episode of The Appalachian Disciples, we explore why gathering together with other believers is not optional; it’s essential!
In a culture that celebrates independence and self-sufficiency, Scripture paints a very different picture. From Genesis to the early church, the Bible shows us that faith was never meant to be lived alone. God designed us for relationships. Isolation weakens faith; community strengthens it.

In this episode of The Appalachian Disciples, we sit down with a coal miner whose journey of faith took him from a law-based religious background to a personal, life-giving relationship with Jesus Christ.
He shares honestly about what it meant to move from “doing religion” to truly knowing Christ for himself. Along the way, God didn’t just change his faith, but restored relationships and reshaped how he shows up as a husband, a worker, and a man of God.
This is a testimony of grace, freedom, and a faith that runs deeper than the coal seams of Appalachia.

As a new year begins, many people are focused on New Year’s resolutions. We think about getting healthier, managing money better, and starting fresh. While those things matter, we invite listeners to focus on something even more important going into 2026: Peace.
In this episode of The Appalachian Disciples, we explore what Scripture calls “the Peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” from Philippians 4. This is a Peace that shows up in the middle of anxiety, uncertainty, and chaos. It is a Peace that does not depend on circumstances and often does not make sense by worldly standards.
Together, we talk about how to walk into 2026 spiritually grounded, steady, and unshaken, even when life feels loud and overwhelming.

In this episode of The Appalachian Disciples, we are joined by Pastor Josiah Stermer about his powerful encounter with Jesus. For much of his life, Josiah believed he was saved, until he realized he had never truly experienced redemption.
He shares how cultural Christianity and outward religion can give the appearance of faith, but only a real relationship with Christ brings transformation. His story challenges us to examine our own walk with God and reminds us that salvation is more than tradition; it’s all about personal encounter with the living Savior.
Listen in as we explore the journey from religion to redemption and the hope that can be found in Jesus alone.
